Forewings are the anterior pair of wings in insects that have two functional pairs of wings. They generally arise on the mesothorax and are located in front of the hindwings. In most insects, forewings serve as flight surfaces, but in several orders they are specialized for protection or other functions.

In beetles (Coleoptera), the forewings are modified into elytra, hardened coverings that protect the hindwings and abdomen when at rest. In grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids (Orthoptera), the forewings are typically leathery tegmina that shield the hindwings while the insect is stationary or preparing to fly. In Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), the forewings are scaled and often brightly colored, contributing to camouflage, signaling, and nocturnal or diurnal activity, while the hindwings also participate in flight. In Diptera (true flies), there is generally a single functional pair of wings, with the hindwings reduced to small balancing organs called halteres; the forewings perform the primary flight function. In other insects, forewings can be membranous, lightly sclerotized, or partially or fully reduced, depending on evolutionary pressures and lifestyle.

Forewings may differ in size, shape, venation, coloration, and texture, with such characteristics providing important taxonomic information. They develop through insect life cycles via wing imaginal discs in holometabolous groups or wing buds in hemimetabolous groups, reflecting broader patterns of insect metamorphosis. Overall, the forewings represent a versatile and diverse component of insect morphology, integral to flight, protection, and ecological adaptation.
