Kooperativiteetti

Kooperativiteetti is a social and personality trait describing the tendency to cooperate with others, to act in ways that facilitate collaboration, and to place group goals above individual interests. In everyday use it covers willingness to share information, help teammates, comply with norms, and resolve conflicts through constructive interaction. The concept is used across psychology, education, and organizational studies to explain how people relate to others in teams and communities.

In psychology, cooperativeness is often discussed as part of personality models. In Cloninger’s Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Cooperativeness is a main character dimension alongside Self-Directedness and Self-Transcendence. It reflects empathy, social tolerance, altruism, and a preference for cooperative rather than competitive approaches. High Cooperativeness is associated with prosocial behavior and harmonious social functioning; low Cooperativeness may be linked to antagonism or social insensitivity. In the broader literature, cooperativeness overlaps with traits such as Agreeableness in the Big Five.

Development and culture matter: upbringing, culture, and situational factors shape how people express cooperativeness. Collectivist contexts may reward cooperative behavior more visibly than individualist ones, but excessive cooperativeness can reduce assertiveness or critical questioning.

Applications include team design, leadership, conflict resolution, and education. Measuring cooperativeness helps understand group dynamics, predict cooperative performance in tasks, and tailor interventions to improve collaboration and social functioning.
