The role typically involves designing, coding, testing, commissioning, and optimizing control programs used on programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and related hardware.

Key responsibilities include interpreting engineering drawings and specifications, selecting appropriate control strategies, and programming in IEC 61131-3 languages such as ladder logic, function block diagram, structured text, or sequential function charts. They configure hardware, integrate with human-machine interfaces (HMI) and SCADA systems, simulate and validate control logic, and perform on-site or remote commissioning, debugging, and performance optimization. Documentation, version control, and maintenance planning are also essential tasks. Compliance with safety standards and reliability requirements is a constant consideration, particularly in critical industries.

Kontrolprogrammers work in diverse sectors, including manufacturing, process industries (chemical, oil and gas, food and beverage), energy, water treatment, logistics, and building automation. They collaborate with control engineers, electrical technicians, IT specialists, and production staff, and may interact with vendors for hardware and software support.
