Knoopwerk

Knoopwerk, or knotwork, is a decorative and functional technique in which cords, threads, or wires are tied and interlaced to form geometric or organic patterns. The method relies on the controlled use of knots and overlaps to create stable structures or flat ornamental surfaces. In Dutch craft contexts, knoopwerk is used in textiles, leatherwork, bookbinding, and jewelry making, as well as in maritime ropework.

Historically, knotting and knotwork appear in many cultures, from ropework on ships to decorative borders in textiles and manuscripts. In the Netherlands and Flanders, knoopwerk has been part of traditional handicrafts and has gained renewed interest through modern DIY and macramé movements.

Techniques commonly involved include basic knots such as overhand, square, and reef knots, as well as larkshead and noose variations; patterns emerge by combining these knots with weaving or threading and by controlling the sequence and tightness. Knoopwerk can serve structural purposes, such as joining cords without stitching, or purely decorative purposes, producing fringes, braids, or lattices. Materials range from natural fibers like cotton, hemp, or jute to synthetic cords, leather, or beading thread.

Contemporary knoopwerk often emphasizes versatility, sustainability, and accessibility, with tutorials and patterns widely available for home crafts, jewelry, and design projects.
