Kattavien

Kattavien is a traditional woven textile and ceremonial banner associated with coastal communities in parts of Southeast Asia. Characterized by long rectangular panels decorated with repeating geometric motifs and stylized natural forms, kattaviens have served both practical and symbolic roles in rituals, communal events, and domestic display.

The name is derived from local vernacular terms that refer to weaving and story-telling, reflecting the role of motifs as encoded cultural narratives. Panels are typically produced on hand-operated looms using plant fibers such as pandanus, abaca or cotton, and natural dyes extracted from roots, leaves and bark.
