Kapitalivarad, also known as "capital punishment" in English, refers to the legal practice of executing a person as a punishment for a serious crime. This method has been employed throughout history across various cultures and legal systems, though its use has become increasingly controversial in modern times. The primary justification for capital punishment is deterrence, retribution, or the protection of society from particularly dangerous offenders, such as those convicted of murder, treason, or terrorism.

The implementation of capital punishment varies widely by jurisdiction. Some countries, such as China, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, retain and frequently use the death penalty, often for crimes including drug trafficking, apostasy, or blasphemy alongside violent offenses. Others, like the United States, Japan, and Singapore, apply it selectively, typically for first-degree murder. Methods of execution differ globally, with common practices including lethal injection, hanging, firing squad, electrocution, and gas chamber. The choice of method is often influenced by legal tradition, technological feasibility, and ethical considerations. Debates surrounding capital punishment frequently revolve around issues of human rights, the risk of wrongful convictions, and the potential for racial or socioeconomic bias in its application.

Critics argue that the death penalty is irreversible, prone to error, and fails to serve as an effective deterrent. Supporters, however, contend that it provides justice for victims' families and maintains public order.
