Kantenband

Kantenband, in English edge banding, is a narrow strip applied to the exposed edge of a panel to conceal the substrate and create a finished surface. It is widely used in furniture making, cabinetry, and interior fittings. Beyond aesthetics, it protects the edge from moisture, wear, and impact and helps to stabilize thin panels by sealing the core.

Kantenband comes in several materials. The most common are PVC and ABS plastics, which offer a durable, affordable finish and can be heated and pressed onto the edge. Wood veneer edge bands use real thin wood layers for a matched appearance with the panel. Other variants include melamine-coated or acrylic edges and, for specialized applications, aluminum or other metal edges.

Typical dimensions for edgebanding are in the range of about 8 to 50 millimeters in width and 0.4 to 3 millimeters in thickness, chosen to suit the panel thickness and desired aesthetic. Substrates are usually particleboard, MDF, or plywood, with the edge band designed to blend with or contrast the surface finish.

Application methods vary. Most edging is applied with edge-banding machines that use heat-activated adhesives (hot-melt or EVA) or cold-applied pre-glued tapes. After bonding, the excess band is trimmed flush with the panel using trimming tools, and any rough edges are scraped or sanded for a smooth finish.

Maintenance is simple: wipe with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Durability depends on material and adhesion quality; poorly bonded edges can peel, especially with exposure to humidity or high heat. Kantenband remains a standard technique for achieving durable, visually cohesive edge finishes in modern furniture and cabinetry.
