These crabs are named for their remarkable ability to camouflage themselves by attaching various species of lichen to their carapaces. This adaptation serves as a highly effective form of mimicry, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their rocky or reef environments, thus evading predators.

The distribution of jäkälärapujen is primarily found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, with a notable presence in the Indo-Pacific region. They typically inhabit shallow coastal areas, including rocky shores, coral reefs, and seagrass beds, where suitable substrates for lichen growth and ample hiding places are abundant.
