Each method balances speed, strength, temperature resistance, and the ability to disassemble. Selecting a joining technique depends on materials, loads, service conditions, and design intent.

Assembling involves putting joined parts together through guided operations, fixtures, jigs, feeders, and often robotics. It encompasses sequential assembly, insertion and alignment steps, fastening, and intermediate testing. Electronics manufacturing, for example, uses surface-mount technology and pick-and-place, while automotive production relies on body-in-white and subassembly lines.

Design and quality considerations are essential for efficient joining and assembling. Designers use principles such as design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for joining (DFJ) to optimize parts, tolerances, and processes. Quality control includes inspection, torque verification, leak testing, nondestructive testing, and functional testing to ensure reliability and performance.

Applications span automotive, aerospace, electronics, consumer goods, and furniture. Trends include increased automation, digital process control, traceability, and sustainable practices that facilitate disassembly and recycling.
