Iskutyö

Iskutyö is a Finnish term that translates literally to "impact work" or "strike work." It refers to the process of shaping or forming metal through repeated hammering or striking. This technique is one of the oldest methods of metalworking and has been used for millennia to create a wide range of objects, from tools and weapons to decorative items and armor.

The process of iskutyö involves using hammers of various shapes and weights to deform heated metal. The heat makes the metal more malleable, allowing it to be shaped without fracturing. The artisan strikes the metal with controlled force and precision, gradually moving the material into the desired form. This can involve techniques such as drawing out (lengthening and thinning the metal), upsetting (thickening and shortening), punching (creating holes), and planishing (smoothing and finishing the surface).

Iskutyö requires significant skill, strength, and an understanding of metal properties. The success of the process depends on factors like the type of metal, its temperature, the design of the hammer, and the force and angle of the strikes. While modern industrial manufacturing often employs automated processes, iskutyö remains relevant in artisanal contexts, particularly in blacksmithing, jewelry making, and historical reenactment, where the unique aesthetic and character imparted by hand-forged metal are highly valued.
