Integratedness

Integratedness is the degree to which the components of a system function together as a unified whole. It denotes coherence, interoperability, and coordinated operation across subsystems, processes, or actors, rather than simply the sum of its parts. A higher integratedness implies more seamless information flow, aligned objectives, and synchronized actions.

The concept is used across fields. In engineering and information technology, integratedness describes how well software, hardware, and data platforms work together, including modularity, standardization, and cross-system interfaces. In organizational and management studies, it refers to cross-functional alignment, integrated planning, and coordinated governance. In urban planning and public policy, it concerns service integration, inter-agency collaboration, and the connectivity of infrastructure and institutions. In ecology, it can describe ecosystem connectivity and the compatibility of social and natural systems within a landscape.

Measurement and indicators often focus on interoperability, data sharing, process alignment, governance structures, and the efficiency of information flows. Trade-offs frequently arise between high integratedness and flexibility or resilience; overly centralized systems can become fragile, while excessive modularity can hinder coordination.

Examples include integrated healthcare delivery networks, enterprise resource planning systems, and smart-city platforms that unify data, services, and infrastructure to support coordinated outcomes.
