Industrial Ethernet refers to the use of Ethernet-based networks in industrial automation and manufacturing. It adapts standard Ethernet for real-time control, high reliability, and operation in harsh environments, enabling direct data exchange among controllers, sensors, actuators, and enterprise IT systems.

A family of protocols operates over Industrial Ethernet, including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, Powerlink, and SERCOS III. Determinism is pursued through real-time extensions, priority-based Quality of Service, and, increasingly, Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Redundancy schemes such as PRP and HSR improve fault tolerance in critical applications.

Networks are commonly built with industrial switches, with topologies ranging from star to ring or mesh. Designers emphasize low latency, bounded jitter, gatewaying to other fieldbuses, and segregation of control and IT traffic through VLANs and QoS policies. Robust cyber-physical segmentation is often part of the architecture to balance accessibility with safety.

Industrial Ethernet offers faster data exchange, scalability, and easier integration with business IT, enabling remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and asset management. It supports plant-wide visibility and interoperability across vendors, facilitating data analytics and operations optimization. The approach also introduces cybersecurity challenges, requiring measures such as network segmentation, secure remote access, patch management, and continuous monitoring.

The market is broad, with manufacturers supplying rugged hardware, switches, and certified profiles. Adoption spans manufacturing, logistics, and process industries, and the technology continues to evolve with TSN, improved reliability standards, and converged IT-OT architectures.
