Impulssikäytös, also known as impulsive behavior, refers to actions that are spontaneous, unplanned, and often driven by immediate desires or emotions rather than rational thought. These behaviors can range in severity from minor, everyday occurrences like an unplanned purchase to more significant actions with negative consequences, such as gambling or aggressive outbursts.

The underlying mechanisms of impulsivity are complex and involve a combination of neurobiological factors and psychological influences. Research suggests that imbalances in neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopamine and serotonin, can play a role. Additionally, differences in brain structure and function, especially in areas associated with decision-making and self-control like the prefrontal cortex, are often implicated.

Psychologically, impulsivity can be linked to a variety of factors. These include difficulty with emotional regulation, a tendency to seek immediate gratification, and a lack of foresight regarding potential negative outcomes. Certain personality traits, such as sensation-seeking or a history of trauma, can also increase the likelihood of impulsive behavior.
