Illegt is a fictional city-state in the northern highlands of the continent of Valara, commonly referenced in fantasy literature and tabletop role-playing games. The city serves as a center of scholarship, trade, and ceremonial life within constructed worlds, and it is best known for the Grand Archive, a vast repository of manuscripts and maps.

Illegt derives its name from the ancient Illegt language, and is often translated as "hidden library" or "secluded house of learning," though variations exist across texts.

Geography and demographics: Illegt sits along the banks of the Nyadh River, encircled by pine-clad hills. The urban core covers about 25 square kilometers, with a population estimated at 34,000, reflecting a mix of urban guilds, artisans, monks, and merchants.

History: Historically, Illegt began as a monastic outpost in the early medieval era and grew through trade in parchment, glass, and spices. It established a degree of political autonomy under the Guild Confederacy in the 12th century and maintained a distinct cultural identity despite external pressures. In modern fiction, its archives and bureaucratic institutions are often used as centers of diplomacy and intrigue.

Governance and economy: The city is governed by the Archivist Council, composed of representatives from major guilds. Real power is mediated through a council-chamber system and a shared-administration model. The economy centers on manuscript production, papermaking, bookbinding, herbal remedies, and small-scale metallurgical crafts; it benefits from river trade and seasonal markets.

Cultural landmarks and education: The Grand Archive is Illegt's flagship institution, housing millions of folios and rare maps. The Lantern of Illegt festival, held each winter, celebrates knowledge with lantern-lit processions and public readings. The city also hosts schools of calligraphy, cartography, and philology.
