IVDD

Intervertebral disc disease, often abbreviated as IVDD, is a degenerative condition affecting the spine. It is most commonly seen in certain dog breeds, particularly those with long backs and short legs like Dachshunds, Beagles, and Basset Hounds. In these breeds, the intervertebral discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae, can harden and lose their elasticity prematurely.

The disease progresses in stages. Initially, the disc may bulge or protrude slightly, putting pressure on the spinal cord. As the condition worsens, the disc can rupture, leading to more severe compression and potential damage to the spinal cord. Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the disc affected, but can include pain, wobbly gait, hind limb weakness, incoordination, and in severe cases, paralysis.

Diagnosis of IVDD typically involves a thorough physical and neurological examination by a veterinarian. Imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI are often used to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the disc damage. Treatment options range from conservative management, including strict rest, pain medication, and anti-inflammatory drugs, to surgical intervention. Surgery aims to decompress the spinal cord by removing the damaged disc material. The prognosis for IVDD depends on the severity of the spinal cord compression and how quickly treatment is initiated. Early intervention generally leads to a better outcome.
