The name combines ideas of Identity, Decentralization, Encryption, and Secure Transfer Architecture, signaling a goal of enabling individuals to prove claims about themselves without revealing unnecessary data. IDEstä emerged from the IDEstä Consortium in the 2020s as a unifying approach that seeks interoperability across governments, enterprises, and individuals.

Core principles of IDEstä include user-centric control, privacy by design, data minimization, and cryptographic verifiability. The framework emphasizes self-sovereign identity concepts, where individuals hold verifiable credentials (VCs) issued by trusted authorities and use verifiable presentations (VPs) to disclose only the necessary information.
