Zero-knowledge is a concept in cryptography describing a method by which one party (the prover) can convince another party (the verifier) that a statement is true without revealing any information about the witness or secret data used to prove it. The idea is to enable assurance of correctness while preserving privacy.

The concept was formalized in 1985 by Silvio Micali, Shafi Goldwasser, and Charles Rackoff. A zero-knowledge proof has three main properties: completeness, so an honest prover can convince an honest verifier; soundness, so a cheating prover cannot convince a verifier of a false statement except with small probability; and zero-knowledge, meaning the verifier learns nothing beyond the validity of the statement, typically demonstrated by the existence of a simulator that can reproduce the interaction without access to the witness.

Zero-knowledge proofs can be interactive, involving multiple rounds of dialogue, or non-interactive, where a single proof suffices. Non-interactive proofs often rely on a common reference string or the Fiat-Shamir heuristic to remove interaction in the random oracle model. Notable developments include zk-SNARKs (succinct, non-interactive proofs with a trusted setup) and zk-STARKs (transparent proofs that avoid trusted setup, using hash-based cryptography and offering post-quantum considerations).

Applications span privacy-preserving authentication, confidential transactions and credentials, blockchain privacy, secure voting, and password verification without disclosing secret data. From identification schemes to privacy-preserving smart contracts, zero-knowledge technologies aim to enable verifiable truth without leaking sensitive information.

Limitations include computational and communication overhead, reliance on cryptographic assumptions, and deployment challenges. Ongoing research seeks to improve efficiency, standardize protocols, and enhance post-quantum security.
