SelfSovereign refers to the principle that individuals should have primary control over their own data and decisions, particularly in digital environments, without undue reliance on centralized authorities. In practice, it is closely associated with self-sovereign identity (SSI), a framework for user-centric identity management in which people own, manage, and selectively disclose their credentials and personal information. SSI relies on cryptographic keys, portable identity wallets, and interoperable standards that enable verifiable proof without exposing full data.

Key technical concepts include decentralized identifiers (DIDs) which serve as persistent, globally unique identifiers controlled by the user; verifiable credentials (VCs) that can be issued by trusted authorities and later cryptographically verified; data minimization and user-controlled disclosure; and revocation and portability across services. Governance and standards are being advanced by bodies such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF).

Benefits often cited are increased user privacy, reduced risk of centralized data breaches, greater data portability, and more granular consent. Challenges include usability and key management risk, regulatory uncertainty, interoperability fragmentation, and questions about liability and governance. Critics warn of potential exclusion for users who lack access to strong digital infrastructure and the risk that fragmented ecosystems undermine universality. Adoption remains experimental in many sectors, with pilots in finance, healthcare, and government services.
