Härnäytyminen is a Finnish term denoting the brittle failure of a material, particularly rock or other solid substances, under applied stress. The concept originates from the Finnish word “härnäys,” meaning brittleness or hard breakage, and refers to the sudden fracturing that occurs when a load exceeds the material’s tensile strength without significant plastic deformation.

The phenomenon is governed by microscopic crack initiation and rapid propagation. Low temperatures, low humidity, and the presence of micro‑fractures or impurities can increase brittleness. In geological contexts, härnäytyminen explains how metamorphic and igneous rocks fracture along planes of weakness during tectonic motion, whereas in engineered materials it signals failure modes that lack energy absorption capacity.
