Hybomitra

Hybomitra is a genus of large biting flies in the family Tabanidae, commonly known as horse flies. The genus comprises numerous species distributed primarily in the Holarctic region, with many described in North America and Europe and some extending into temperate areas of Asia. Members are robust, generally medium to very large in size, often ranging from about 10 to 30 millimeters in body length. Hybomitra is placed in the subfamily Tabaninae, within the tribe Tabanini.

Adults are strong fliers and are usually most active in warm, sunny conditions. Males feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while females require a vertebrate blood meal for egg development and will bite mammals, including livestock and humans. Bites are typically painful and can disrupt grazing and productivity. Many Hybomitra species visit flowers and contribute to pollination. Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic, developing in mud or damp soil near water where they feed on invertebrates or detritus.

The life cycle takes place in temperate habitats with eggs laid near water; eggs hatch into larvae, which molt through several instars before pupating and emerging as adults. Hybomitra species occupy a range of habitats from wetlands and riverbanks to meadows and forest edges. They are generally not considered primary human disease vectors, but as biting flies they can mechanically transmit pathogens and pose a nuisance to livestock management.
