Houtstructuur refers to the structural use and design of wood in construction and architecture. In Dutch building practice wood is valued for its renewable nature, aesthetic qualities, and capacity to provide structural integrity. The term encompasses both load‑bearing elements such as beams, joists, and columns, as well as design aspects like exposed timber detailing, paneling, and cladding.

Wood offers several mechanical advantages. Its high strength-to‑weight ratio makes it suitable for long spans when engineered correctly, and its natural damping properties reduce vibrations.
