Hinterradantriebe

Hinterradantriebe, often abbreviated as RWD, refers to a vehicle drivetrain layout where the engine's power is transmitted exclusively to the rear wheels. This contrasts with front-wheel drive (FWD), where power goes to the front wheels, and all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), where power is sent to all wheels.

In a typical rear-wheel drive system, the engine, usually located at the front of the vehicle, sends power through a transmission and driveshaft to a differential located at the rear axle. This differential then splits the power and directs it to each rear wheel through axle shafts.

Historically, rear-wheel drive was the dominant layout for most automobiles due to its mechanical simplicity and effectiveness in delivering power. It is often favored for its driving dynamics, as the weight distribution can be more balanced, and the driving wheels are separate from the steering wheels, which can reduce torque steer. This layout is commonly found in sports cars, performance sedans, and many trucks and larger vehicles where carrying heavy loads or towing is a primary function.

However, rear-wheel drive vehicles can be more prone to oversteer, especially in slippery conditions, as the rear wheels are responsible for both propulsion and contributing to cornering forces. This requires more driver skill to manage, particularly in adverse weather. Modern electronic stability control systems have significantly mitigated some of these handling challenges.
