Hiillostu

Hiillostu is a traditional Nordic craft technique used to create a heat-darkened surface on wood and, less commonly, ceramics by controlled exposure to embers. The term derives from Finnish hiili meaning ember or charcoal and a productive suffix that forms a noun for a process. In practice, a piece is placed near a controlled fire or over a bed of smoldering coals, with exposure carefully timed to produce a carbonized layer that is then brushed, planed, and sealed with oil or resin to stabilize the patina.

The method dates to rural workshops of northern Europe where fire and warmth were central to daily life, and it has been documented in craft circles since at least the late 19th century. In contemporary practice, hiillostu is valued for its distinctive dark patina that enhances grain in ash, oak, and other hardwoods, as well as for its relatively simple materials and low-tech setup. Techniques vary in aggressiveness and texture: longer exposure yields a deeper, matte finish, while shorter exposure produces a subtler appearance after finishing. Some makers combine hiillostu with mechanical distressing or pigment washes to achieve contrast.

The resulting work is common in furniture, bowls, serving pieces, and decorative panels, often featured in design contexts that emphasize traditional methods and sustainable materials.
