Hechttechniek

Hechttechniek is a Dutch term referring to the set of techniques used to join materials through stitching. It covers seam construction, edge finishing, and closures, and is applied in fields such as fashion, upholstery, leather goods, bookbinding, and repair work. The focus is on creating durable connections and well-finished edges, whether by hand or with a sewing machine.

The term originates from the verb hechten, meaning to stitch or join, and techniek, meaning technique. It is commonly found in Dutch sewing literature, training courses, and crafts, where practitioners distinguish between different stitch types and their applications to fabrics, leather, or composite materials.

Common techniques within hechttechniek include backstitch for strong, durable seams; running stitch for simple seams and basting; slip stitch for nearly invisible closures; overcast or whip stitch to prevent fraying along raw edges; and blind stitches for discreet hems. In machine work, lockstitch and zigzag stitches are typical, while handwork emphasizes precise, controlled stitching suited to craft and repair tasks.

Materials and tools associated with hechttechniek vary by project. Thread type and weight are chosen to match fabric and durability requirements (for example, cotton or polyester threads).
