Heavyhaul, or heavy haulage, refers to the transportation of unusually heavy or oversized loads that exceed the capacity of standard freight services. Such cargo often requires specialized equipment, detailed planning, and regulatory permissions. Common targets include industrial plant machinery, transformers, wind turbine components, ship sections, bridges, and large industrial equipment.

Equipment and methods used in heavyhaul depend on the load and route. Typical systems include multi-axle hydraulic modular trailers and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), extendable trailers, and heavy-duty cranes for loading and offloading. Rail-based heavy haul uses reinforced flatcars and gantry systems, while marine operations rely on heavy-lift ships or barges. Movements may combine modes, with road moves to a rail terminal or port and vice versa. Escort vehicles, pilots, and sometimes police coordination are commonly required to manage traffic, clearance issues, and safety.

Planning and execution involve detailed engineering surveys of routes, structural assessments of bridges and road segments, and obtaining overweight or oversize permits. Engineers calculate axle loads, center of gravity, and load distribution to prevent road or structure damage. Operations require staged access, temporary closures, traffic control plans, and careful timing to minimize disruption. Weather, road conditions, and height or width restrictions are critical factors in scheduling.

Regulatory and safety considerations emphasize load securing, compliance with weight limits, and adherence to jurisdictional regulations. Operators carry insurance and risk-management plans, and cross-border shipments may involve international conventions and customs procedures. Heavyhaul remains essential in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, mining, aerospace, and infrastructure, enabling the transport of exceptionally large and heavy assets that standard logistics cannot accommodate.
