Haplopelma

Haplopelma is a genus of tarantulas that were formerly classified under the genus Cyriopagopus. These spiders are native to Southeast Asia, primarily found in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. They are known for their arboreal or semi-arboreal lifestyle, often inhabiting tree hollows, bark crevices, or dense vegetation.

Haplopelma species are characterized by their relatively large size, robust build, and striking coloration, which can vary but often includes earthy tones with darker markings. Their venom is considered potent, and while not typically aggressive unless provoked, they possess a defensive behavior that includes threat displays and a quick bite. Due to their venom potency and defensive nature, they are generally not recommended for beginner tarantula keepers.

The taxonomy of Haplopelma has been subject to revision, with some species previously placed in this genus now reclassified. Research and expert opinions continue to refine the understanding of their relationships within the Theraphosidae family.
