Cyriopagopus

Cyriopagopus is a genus of tarantulas belonging to the family Theraphosidae. These spiders are native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Cyriopagopus spiders are known for their arboreal lifestyle, meaning they primarily live in trees and shrubs. They are often found in humid, tropical rainforest environments.

The genus Cyriopagopus was first described by Reginald Innes Pocock in 1895. Species within this genus are characterized by their relatively large size and striking coloration. Many species exhibit iridescent blue or purple hues on their legs and carapace, contrasting with darker body segments. Their webs are typically built in tree hollows, under bark, or within dense foliage, forming a silken tube or funnel.

When threatened, Cyriopagopus spiders may exhibit defensive behaviors such as displaying their fangs or flicking urticating hairs from their abdomen. Their venom is generally considered medically significant to humans, though bites are rare as they are not typically aggressive unless provoked. As with all tarantulas, handling these spiders is not recommended for inexperienced individuals. Their diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates. Conservation status varies among species, with some facing threats from habitat loss and the pet trade.
