They are typically made of nylon or other synthetic materials, and their stiffness can vary from soft to hard.

The history of the toothbrush can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Early forms of tooth cleaning implements included frayed twigs, animal bones, and porcupine quills. In China, during the Tang Dynasty, toothbrushes with bristles made from hog hair attached to bone or bamboo handles are believed to have emerged. The modern toothbrush, as we know it, began to take shape in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Hambaharjad come in various designs to suit different needs. Manual toothbrushes offer a simple and effective way to clean teeth, requiring manual dexterity from the user. Electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, use battery-powered motors to oscillate, rotate, or vibrate the brush head, often making the cleaning process easier and potentially more thorough for some individuals. Different brush head shapes and bristle patterns are also available, including those designed for sensitive teeth, braces, or hard-to-reach areas.

Regular and proper use of a hambaharja, along with toothpaste, is crucial for maintaining oral health. It helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Dentists generally recommend brushing twice a day for two minutes each session, replacing the toothbrush or brush head every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
