HARPSNGs are equipped with more advanced features than their predecessors, allowing for greater precision in measuring the Doppler shift of star light caused by orbiting planets. This, in turn, enables the detection of smaller and more distant planets than previously possible. The HARPSNG family of instruments is based on the ESPRESSO (Echelle SPectrographe pour la Recherche d'Étoiles Seismiques) instrument's optical design, but with enhanced electronics and clearer optics.
