This coating is typically created by fusing a vitreous material, a form of glass, to the underlying substrate through a high-temperature firing process.

The primary functions of a glasyrbeläggning are multifaceted. In ceramics, it serves to render porous earthenware or stoneware impermeable to liquids, making them suitable for dishes and sanitaryware. It also provides a durable, hygienic, and easily cleanable surface. Decoratively, glazes offer a vast palette of colors, textures, and finishes, from matte to high gloss, and can be used to create intricate patterns and designs. For metals, particularly in applications like cookware and appliances, an enameled coating provides resistance to corrosion, wear, and staining, while also offering aesthetic appeal.
