Gipsbasis

Gipsbasis refers to gypsum-based base materials used as foundational layers in construction and related crafts. The term describes a family of products in which calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) is the main component, typically blended with additives to adjust workability, setting behavior, bonding, and mechanical strength. Common forms include gypsum plaster and gypsum-based core materials used in drywalls and plaster systems.

Composition and production

Gypsum base materials are produced by processing natural gypsum into plaster powders or dense granules, which are then mixed with water and various additives. Additives may include fillers, polymers, fibers, or bonding agents to improve adhesion, reduce shrinkage, increase thixotropy, or tailor setting time. The resulting mix is applied in coats or used as the core of panel products such as gypsum boards, where it is bound to paper facings or fiber fleece.

Properties

Gypsum-based bases are lightweight and provide a smooth, uniform surface ready for finishing. They offer good fire resistance, dimensional stability, and relatively high vapor permeability. However, they are sensitive to moisture and must be protected in wet or damp environments. They typically cure at ambient temperatures through hydration and do not release significant hazardous byproducts.

Applications

Used as base coats and bedding for interior plaster systems, backing for tile in appropriate areas, and as core materials in gypsum boards and decorative plasterwork. They are also employed in architectural mold making and various crafts where a smooth, easy-to-work surface is desired.

Standards and environment

Gypsum-based products are commonly regulated by regional or national standards governing composition, strength, and fire performance. Environmentally, gypsum can be recycled from construction waste, helping reduce landfill and promote circular material use.
