Gesturewaving

Gesturewaving is the act of using the hand or arm to convey information through movement, most commonly as a wave. It serves as a social tool for greetings, farewells, attention-getting signals, or signaling presence in a group or toward a person. Gesturewaving can be spontaneous or deliberate and often accompanies spoken language or other forms of nonverbal communication.

Common forms include an open hand with the palm facing outward to greet, a two-handed wave for greater visibility, or more abrupt motions such as a finger wag in certain contexts. The interpretation of a wave varies by culture, setting, and relationship between the people involved; what counts as friendly in one culture may be neutral or unclear in another.

Beyond social use, gesture waving is a focus of human–computer interaction. Cameras and motion sensors can recognize waving patterns to wake devices, switch slides, or control media without touching a surface. Research covers recognition accuracy, robustness to background motion, and accessibility concerns for people with movement differences.

Social norms influence when and how to wave. Appropriate use respects personal space, timing, and attention. In crowded or high‑risk environments, a subtle or brief wave is generally preferred to avoid distraction or miscommunication.
