Gegensteuerungsphase

Gegensteuerungsphase refers to a critical period in project management, particularly within the PRINCE2 methodology. It is a phase that occurs when a project is identified as deviating significantly from its planned baseline, whether in terms of time, cost, quality, scope, risk, or benefits. The core purpose of the Gegensteuerungsphase is to address these deviations and bring the project back under control.

During this phase, the project manager is responsible for analyzing the extent of the deviation and identifying its root causes. This often involves a thorough review of project progress, resource allocation, and any external factors that may have contributed to the problem. Once the issues are understood, the project manager must develop a range of options for corrective action. These options are then presented to the appropriate authority, typically the Project Board, along with a recommendation.

The Gegensteuerungsphase is initiated by an Exception Report, which formally alerts the Project Board to the problem. Following the presentation of options, the Project Board makes a decision on how to proceed. This decision might involve authorizing a revised project plan, allocating additional resources, or even terminating the project if it is deemed no longer viable. The Gegensteuerungsphase is therefore a crucial control mechanism that ensures projects remain aligned with their objectives and business case, preventing uncontrolled drift and potential failure.
