Many modern systems use closed-loop regulation, where tension feedback adjusts rollers, brakes, or feeds to maintain a target value.

Tension management is essential across textile processes. In weaving, warp yarns are kept under comparatively constant tension by warp beams and tensioning devices, while weft yarn tension must be synchronized with take-up to avoid defects. In knitting and spinning, uneven or excessive tension can cause stitches to misform, yarn breakage, or fabric distortion. Excessive tension can shorten yarn life and increase wear on machinery; insufficient tension can produce slack areas, loose fabric, and seam or edge defects.
