Takeup, or take-up, is a general term for a device or mechanism that takes up slack or winds material in a system. It appears in a variety of industries and applications, where maintaining proper tension or collecting used length is important for smooth operation.

In belt and chain drives, a take-up device maintains belt or chain tension by absorbing slack and compensating for wear, stretching, and thermal expansion. These devices can be fixed or adjustable, and are often spring-loaded, located at one end of the run to keep motion consistent and minimize slip.

In textiles, the take-up mechanism winds finished fabric onto a take-up beam or roller as it is produced. This movement advances the fabric from the weaving area to form a tightly wound fabric package and regulates tension during production.

In printing, film, and magnetic tape systems, a take-up spool or reel collects the spent material while supply spools feed fresh material to the process. This arrangement helps sustain continuous operation and organized waste handling.

In cable, rope, and hoisting arrangements, take-up reels store or remove slack to prevent tangling and reduce strain on drives. They may be manual, spring-driven, or motorized, depending on the scale and speed of the system.
