Färgåtergivningsinriktning, often translated as color rendering intent, is a concept in color management that describes how colors are mapped from one color space to another. When colors are converted, for instance, from a wide gamut color space like Adobe RGB to a narrower one like sRGB, some colors might fall outside the destination gamut. The rendering intent determines how these out-of-gamut colors are handled.

There are generally four main types of rendering intents. Perceptual intent attempts to preserve the visual relationship between colors by compressing the entire gamut of the source space into the destination space. This can alter all colors, including those already within the destination gamut, to maintain overall color harmony. Relative colorimetric intent maps source colors to the nearest reproducible color in the destination gamut. White points are also adjusted. Absolute colorimetric intent maps source colors to the nearest reproducible color without adjusting the white point. This is often used for proofing. Saturation intent prioritizes preserving the saturation of colors, potentially at the expense of hue and lightness accuracy. This is less commonly used for photographic or general image reproduction.

The choice of rendering intent significantly impacts the final appearance of an image, especially when dealing with colors that cannot be accurately reproduced in the target output device or color space. Understanding these intents is crucial for achieving predictable and desired color results in graphic design, photography, and printing workflows.
