FusionGelenk is an emerging concept in biomechanical engineering and regenerative medicine that envisions a hybrid joint system capable of providing stability through a fused interface while preserving or restoring a degree of natural joint mobility. It combines fusion principles with articulated motion using bioactive interfaces and programmable actuation, aiming to improve recovery and functional outcomes compared with traditional fusion or full joint replacement alone.

The typical design involves a porous scaffold or implant that fuses to adjacent bone to establish a stable base, a compliant intermediate joint layer built from hydrogel or shape-memory polymers to permit controlled motion, and miniature actuators or hydraulic elements that drive movement within a predefined range. Integrated sensors monitor mechanical load, temperature, and tissue integration to adjust stiffness and motion in real time, enabling adaptive protection during healing and performance in daily activities.

In research settings, FusionGelenk concepts are explored in orthopedic and spinal applications, including partial spinal fusion segments and reconstructive joints. Early studies focus on biocompatibility, osseointegration, wear resistance, and the long-term stability of interfaces between biological tissue and synthetic components, as well as the reliability of motion control systems.
