Friedensbuilding, literally “Peace Building” in German, is a term used for public or institutional buildings dedicated to the promotion of peace, dialogue, and conflict resolution. The designation is applied to various municipal, regional, or NGO facilities that combine administrative functions with spaces for peace education, mediation services, and cultural exchange.

In practice, a Friedensbuilding may house a city or regional mediation office, a small peace museum or archive, and conference or training spaces for NGOs and educational programs in peace and conflict studies. It may also host negotiations, diplomatic events, and commemorations related to reconciliation.

Architectural considerations emphasize accessibility, transparency, and flexibility. Typical features include public lobbies, adaptable conference rooms, quiet mediation suites, and learning spaces. Sustainable design and universal accessibility are commonly prioritized.

The concept grew in popularity within German-speaking regions during the late 20th century as part of postwar reconciliation and peace education initiatives. Projects are typically funded by public authorities in collaboration with civil society organizations, museums, and universities.
