Formaia

Formaia is a breed of domestic pig originating from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. It is a hardy, rustic pig known for its adaptability to various environmental conditions and its ability to thrive on forage and less intensive diets. Historically, Formaia pigs were raised for meat production, contributing to the local culinary traditions of the region.

The breed is characterized by its distinctive appearance, often featuring a dark coat with brindle markings and large, erect ears. They are considered a slow-growing breed, which is often associated with a higher quality of meat, rich in flavor and with good marbling. This slower growth rate is a key factor in the breed's suitability for traditional and artisanal pork production methods.
