Folaatkierroon, also known as folate deficiency disorder, refers to a medical condition that arises when the body lacks adequate levels of folate (vitamin B9). Folate plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis, repair, and cell division, making it especially important for prenatal development and rapid cell proliferation.

Causes of folaatkierroon are varied. Dietary insufficiency—common in individuals with restrictive diets or malabsorption disorders—is a primary factor. Gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, and gastric bypass surgery can impair folate absorption. Alcoholism, certain medications (including antiepileptic drugs and some chemotherapies), and genetic variations in the MTHFR gene can also lower folate levels.

Typical symptoms are often nonspecific and include fatigue, weakness, pallor, shortness of breath, and mouth sores. In severe cases, megaloblastic anemia can develop, characterized by enlarged red blood cells that fail to transport oxygen efficiently. Neural tube defects in newborns are a severe consequence of maternal folaatkierroon during pregnancy, underscoring the importance of preventive measures for women of childbearing age.

Diagnosis is established by measuring serum folate concentration, red blood cell folate, and homocysteine levels. Additional blood tests may assess red blood cell indices and rule out other causes of anemia.

Treatment involves folic acid supplementation, typically 0.4 to 5 milligrams daily, depending on severity. Dietary counseling encourages consumption of leafy greens, legumes, citrus fruits, and fortified cereals. In pregnant patients, a daily 400 microgram folic acid dose is recommended at least one month before conception and through the first trimester to reduce neural tube defect risk.

Epidemiology indicates that folaatkierroon is more prevalent among populations with limited access to fortified foods, heavy alcohol users, and individuals with malabsorptive disorders. Public health initiatives in several countries include mandatory fortification of flour and grains with folic acid, which has been linked to reduced rates of neural tube defects. Prevention strategies emphasize balanced nutrition, prenatal folate supplementation, and screening for high‑risk groups, thereby reducing both symptomatic and long‑term complications associated with folate deficiency.
