Firstexpiry is an inventory management principle focused on using or selling items according to their expiration dates, ensuring that products with the earliest expiration are prioritized. The term is often used interchangeably with FEFO, or First Expired, First Out, and is commonly applied to perishable goods, medicines, and other items with defined shelf lives.

Operationally, firstexpiry requires accurate expiration labeling and reliable batch or lot tracking. Warehouse management systems or enterprise resource planning software must be able to sort stock by expiry date and guide picking, replenishment, and distribution decisions. The approach also demands regular stock rotation and monitoring to prevent silent expirations, with near-expiry items often earmarked for promotions or special handling.

Benefits include reduced waste, improved safety and quality compliance, better customer trust, and more efficient inventory turnover. By prioritizing oldest stock, organizations can minimize losses due to expiry and maintain fresher inventory.

Challenges include the need for precise labeling and data accuracy, the potential for conflicts with cost accounting or batch aging, and storage constraints that can limit FEFO applicability for certain products. Some items lack clear expiry dates or have non-uniform shelf lives, complicating implementation.

Implementation considerations include standardizing expiry data formats, using barcodes or RFID, integrating with ERP or WMS, and establishing policies for near-expiry handling and staff training. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and consumer packaged goods frequently employ firstexpiry practices to meet safety, regulatory, and waste-reduction goals.
