Faltbildung
Faltbildung (fold formation) is a term used to describe the development of folds in layered materials, most often in a geologic context but also applicable to engineered materials. It refers to the bending and curving of originally flat or parallel layers due to differential stress, temperature conditions, and the rheology of the participating substances. The result is a structure where layers are arranged in curves with identifiable hinge lines and limbs.
In geology, Faltbildung occurs during compressional tectonics when rock layers deform ductilely under high pressures and
In materials science and engineering, Faltbildung can refer to folding, wrinkling, or buckling of thin sheets
Study methods include field mapping, structural analysis of outcrops, thin-section petrography, and numerical modeling. Faltbildung provides
