FPGA accelerators are computing devices that use field-programmable gate arrays to accelerate specific workloads by implementing custom hardware circuits. They can be deployed as PCIe expansion cards, embedded modules in systems-on-a-chip, or cloud-based instances, sitting between the host CPU and memory to provide targeted performance enhancements.

An FPGA accelerator relies on a programmable fabric consisting of logic blocks, memory blocks, and specialized elements such as DSP slices, interconnected by a reconfigurable interconnect. This architecture enables highly customized data paths, deep parallelism, and deterministic latency for chosen algorithms. The reconfigurable nature allows the same device to be adapted for different tasks without hardware redesign, though changes may require time to recompile and reload the configuration.

Development and deployment typically involve hardware description languages (Verilog or VHDL), high-level synthesis from C/C++/OpenCL, or vendor-specific toolchains. Partial or dynamic reconfiguration can update portions of the fabric on the fly, supporting multiple workloads on a single device. Common workloads include neural network inference, digital signal processing, cryptography, database filtering, and network data processing, often accompanied by high memory bandwidth and tailored data paths.

Compared with CPUs, FPGA accelerators offer higher energy efficiency and lower latency for specialized tasks but entail greater development complexity and longer time-to-market. Compared with GPUs, they provide deterministic latency and customizable pipelines at the cost of lower raw throughput for broad workloads. Compared with ASICs, they offer reconfigurability and lower non-recurring engineering costs, with trade-offs in peak efficiency and unit cost.

Overall, FPGA accelerators are a flexible option for accelerating compute-intensive, latency-sensitive, or power-constrained workloads across data centers and edge environments.
