Erpornis

Erpornis is a genus of small passerine birds belonging to the family Zosteropidae, commonly known as white-eyes. These birds are native to Southeast Asia and are characterized by the distinctive ring of white feathers around their eyes, which gives the family its name. The genus Erpornis currently contains two recognized species.

Erpornis zantholeuca, the white-bellied erpornis, is found in a wide range of forested habitats across mainland Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago. It is a relatively small bird, typically measuring around 10-12 centimeters in length. Its plumage is generally olive-green above and pale white or yellowish below, with a slender, slightly curved bill. They are often observed foraging in small flocks, feeding on insects, nectar, and small fruits.

The second species, Erpornis nigrocyaneus, the black-crowned erpornis, is found in the mountains of Taiwan. This species exhibits a similar body shape and size to E. zantholeuca, but it is distinguished by a prominent black crown and a slightly darker overall coloration. Its diet and behavior are comparable to its mainland relative, inhabiting montane forests and feeding on similar food sources.

The taxonomic classification of Erpornis has seen some changes over time. Previously, some species now placed in other genera were considered part of Erpornis. However, current research and genetic studies have refined the understanding of these relationships, leading to the current composition of the genus. Like other white-eyes, Erpornis plays a role in seed dispersal and insect control within its ecosystem.
