Ehkäisyvalmisteilla, commonly known as contraceptives or birth control methods, are used to prevent unintended pregnancies. These methods vary widely in their mechanism of action, effectiveness, and reversibility. They are broadly categorized into hormonal and non-hormonal options.

Hormonal contraceptives, such as the pill, patch, ring, implant, and injection, work by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to hinder sperm from reaching the egg, or thinning the uterine lining to prevent implantation. Combined hormonal contraceptives contain estrogen and progestin, while progestin-only methods contain only progestin.

Non-hormonal methods include barrier methods like condoms (male and female), diaphragms, and cervical caps, which physically block sperm. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are another option; these small devices are inserted into the uterus and can be either copper (non-hormonal) or hormonal. Spermicides are chemicals that kill sperm and are often used in conjunction with barrier methods. Natural family planning methods involve tracking the menstrual cycle to identify fertile periods and avoiding intercourse during those times.

The choice of contraceptive method depends on individual health factors, lifestyle, effectiveness desired, and personal preferences. Consulting a healthcare professional is recommended to determine the most suitable option. Emergency contraception, often referred to as the "morning-after pill," can be used after unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), such as IUDs and implants, are highly effective and last for several years.
