By keeping the body compact and the center of mass closer to the ground, practitioners aim to improve postural stability, reduce sway, and enhance safety on uneven terrain or during reactive tasks. The concept emphasizes controlled, below-threshold postures rather than aggressive downward movement, and it is considered distinct from general crouching or lowered postures used for other purposes.

Origin and usage: The term emerged in the biomechanics literature in the 2010s as researchers examined stabilizing strategies in balance and fall-prevention programs. It is applied in rehabilitation, athletic training, and physical education to teach safer movement patterns, particularly for older adults and for athletes returning from injury.

Techniques and practice: Training involves tasks performed in a deliberately lowered stance, such as partial squats, low-step descend drills, and loaded carries while maintaining knee flexion and a neutral spine. Cues include keeping the center of gravity over the base of support, moving with slow, controlled tempo, and avoiding rapid transitions. It is often complemented by proprioceptive and ankle-stabilization exercises.

Benefits and limitations: Proponents note improvements in balance, postural control, and fall risk reduction. Critics caution that overemphasis on a low stance may reduce explosive power and gait efficiency in fast tasks, and improper technique can increase knee load. As with many motor strategies, effectiveness depends on context, task demands, and individual capability.
