Digitaalitulolähtömoduulit, often abbreviated as DIO modules, are electronic devices used in industrial automation and control systems to interface digital signals between a computer or controller and external devices. These modules serve as the bridge that allows a control system to both receive information from and send commands to the physical world.

A digital input function of a DIO module allows it to read the state of digital signals, which are typically binary (on or off, high or low voltage). This enables the controller to monitor the status of switches, sensors, buttons, or other devices that produce a digital output. For example, a proximity sensor detecting the presence of an object would generate a digital signal that a DIO module's input can read.

Conversely, the digital output function of a DIO module allows the controller to send digital signals to external devices. This enables the system to activate relays, turn lights on or off, control solenoids, or drive other actuators that respond to digital commands. For instance, a control program might send a digital output signal to activate a motor starter.

DIO modules are commonly found in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), data acquisition systems, and industrial PCs. They are crucial for implementing automation strategies, where discrete events need to be monitored and acted upon in real-time.
