Dieselmekaniska is the field of mechanical engineering and trade practice focused on diesel engines and their systems. It covers the design, installation, operation, maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and refurbishment of diesel-powered machinery used in transportation, industry, and power generation. Practitioners work in automotive workshops, marine yards, industrial plants, and service fleets.

Diesel engines come in various configurations, most commonly four-stroke with direct fuel injection, but two-stroke designs are still used in some marine and heavy-duty applications. The core subsystems include the fuel-injection system (pump, rail, injectors), the air intake and turbocharging, the combustion chamber, the exhaust and aftertreatment systems, the cooling circuit, lubrication system, and the starting and controls equipment. Modern engines rely on electronic control units, sensors, and diagnostic communication protocols to optimize performance and emissions.

Typical tasks in diesel mechanics include preventive maintenance (oil and filter changes, coolant checks, belt/timing inspections), mechanical inspections (valves, bearings, compression), and diagnostics (compression tests, leak checks, fuel-system testing, scan-tool readings). Repairs may involve replacing injectors, fuel pumps, gaskets, turbochargers, and timing components, or overhauling engines. Training emphasizes safety, mechanical skills, and increasingly electronic diagnostics, common-rail fuel systems, turbochargers, and emissions-control devices such as particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction.

The field intersects with automotive, marine, and industrial sectors. It is shaped by regulatory standards for emissions, noise, and safety, as well as by advances in alternative fuels, electrification, and onboard diagnostics. Education pathways include vocational programs, apprenticeships, and OEM or university training, with certification commonly offered by national bodies or industry associations.
