Designschulen

Designschulen are educational institutions focused on the study and practice of design. They offer programs in fields such as graphic design, product and industrial design, interaction and user experience, fashion, interior, and communication design. Most programs combine theory with studio-based, hands-on projects and require a portfolio for admission. Education often emphasizes interdisciplinary work, collaboration with industry, and a problem-solving mindset central to design thinking.

Historically, formal design education grew in the early 20th century with movements like the Bauhaus, which linked art, craft, and technology. Since then, design schools have proliferated worldwide and operate under different governance models: some are part of universities or universities of applied sciences, others run as independent academies or conservatories. Degrees range from bachelor and master programs to diploma and continuing education certificates; many programs culminate in a portfolio or final project, and sometimes in an exhibition or public presentation.

In German-speaking countries design schools (Designschulen) are commonly housed within Fachhochschulen or art and design faculties and may be called Hochschulen für Gestaltung or Kunst- und Designhochschulen. Accreditation generally follows national or regional standards for higher education; curricula stress project work, design methods, history, and critical thinking, alongside technical skills in software, materials, or prototyping. Research often centers on design theory, human-centered design, sustainability, and digital culture.

Beyond the classroom, design schools foster connections to industry through internships, live projects, and guest lecturers, and they contribute to design culture via exhibitions, publications, and collaborations with companies and public institutions.
