Gestaltung

Gestaltung is a German term meaning design, formation, or compositional arrangement. It denotes the act of shaping and organizing visual, spatial, or material elements to achieve a coherent, purposeful whole. The word derives from gestalten “to shape” and the suffix -ung forming a process noun.

In design theory and practice, Gestaltung encompasses both the process of creation and the resulting artifact.

Design principles commonly associated with Gestaltung include balance, contrast, hierarchy, alignment, rhythm, proportion, unity, and variety.

Historically, the term is central to German design culture and movements from early modernism to the Bauhaus,
